Premier League clubs to review £14.95 pay-per-view fee this week with bosses under pressure to scrap PPV during second lockdown

Premier League chiefs are under increasing pressure to axe pay-per-view football with clubs to discuss the broadcasting agreement this week.

Supporters currently must pay £14.95 per game to watch a selection of matches each week, with five Premier League fixtures scheduled for next weekend listed as PPV.

There has been strong criticism of the PPV system since it was announced, and opposition has only further increased following the confirmation of a new month-long coronavirus lockdown to begin later this week.

While during the initial lockdown all extra matches – being those not originally selected for broadcast – were handed out to various broadcasters and some even shown for free by the BBC and on Amazon Prime and Sky’s Pick channel, we head into this second lockdown with fans still being required to pay a one-off fee to watch their team in action.

Premier League clubs will meet this week to discuss the £14.95 fee following serious criticism, and league bosses are under increasing pressure to scrap PPV entirely, The Sun report.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday announced the impending four-week lockdown across England, which means pubs, restaurants, gyms, non-essential shops and places of worship must close when the lockdown begins on Thursday.

“I’m afraid no responsible Prime Minister can ignore the message of those figures,” said Mr Johnson at a Downing Street press conference.

“We know the cost of these restrictions – the impact on jobs and livelihoods, and people’s mental health. No-one wants to be imposing these measures.”

The Prime Minister thanked people who had been ‘putting up with’ local restrictions.

But he warned: “We’ve got to be humble in the face of nature… the virus is spreading even faster than the reasonable worst case scenario of our scientific advisers.

“Unless we act, we could see deaths in this country running at several thousand a day – a peak of mortality, alas, bigger than the one we saw in April.”
