Ryan Christie is all of Scotland right now after the nation finally qualified for a major tournament.
The Scots ended 22 years of hurt with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Serbia in their play-off final on Thursday night.
They will join England in Group D at next summer’s European Championship, their first major tournament since 1998, after David Marshall saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s decisive spot-kick.
Scotland looked set to have their hearts broken as Christie’s opener was cancelled out late on by Luka Jovic, taking the game to extra-time.
But Steve Clarke’s men held their nerve with five perfect penalties, before Marshall made himself a hero.
Speaking after the game, Celtic forward Christie could barely contain his emotions as he spoke about what it means for Scotland as a country, amid decades of failure and a year battling coronavirus.
“It’s just an amazing night. From the start, we believed,” he told Sky Sports, welling up with tears from the start.
“Even the way the game went tonight, conceding that late equaliser, we dug in.
“Penalties away from home and big Marsh comes up! Amazing, unbelievable.”
“It wasn’t nice, when you’re on the pitch and you feel like you can impact it, but once you’re off you can’t watch it.
“Those penalties are probably the worst thing I’ve ever been through.
“It’s just for everything. I’m gone. For the whole nation, it’s been a horrible year and we knew we could give a little something to this country.
“I hope everyone back home is having a party tonight. We’ve been through it so many years.
“We know it, you know it, everyone knows it, and it’s a monkey off our back now.”
