Wayne Rooney would be ‘smart choice’ for next Derby County manager with Eddie Howe also tipped to be in running

Wayne Rooney should be given the opportunity to manage Derby County, talkSPORT has been told.

The Rams sacked Phillip Cocu with the club rock-bottom of the Championship after 11 games and just one win to their name.

Rooney joined Derby in January as a player-coach as he looked to the next stage of his career.

His chance in management could come sooner than expected following Cocu’s departure and he is one of the front runners for the role.

Former Derby defender Warren Barton feels that England legend Rooney would be a good choice.

He told talkSPORT: “I would like Wayne to be given the opportunity because he knows the football club. He wants to get into coaching straight away and we’ve seen it with new managers being given a chance and that influx of confidence in the players.

“He’s got the total respect as well. Shay (Given) has been at the club a while as well so knows the people there.

“Sometimes you just need a fresh face, a fresh voice and a bit of drive. Do we want to keep seeing the old faces that turn out and turn along? Eddie Howe would be another coach who has good ideas.

“It needs someone with young hunger and determination. If you get stale and boring and pedestrian you aren’t going to challenge in that league.

“Wayne will be hungry to be successful. He understands what it needs to be at that level and has the respect of everyone at the football club.

“I think it would be a smart move.”

Derby are also on the verge of being sold for £60million to Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan, the cousin of the Man City owner and part of the Abu Dhabi royal family.

That reign will start with a new manager and Barton feels like the club needed a chance.

He added: “He’s gone in there with a great pedigree as a player and obviously did well in Holland. He’s a class act and that gave him a little bit of leeway with the media, with the staff in the club and the board members as well.

“It wasn’t working. I’ve only heard good things about him as a person but obviously it’s about results. It’s a good football club there. I spent a couple of years at the end of my career there and they want to be challenging and get back to the promise land of the Premier League.

“They are very ambitious and have some good young players coming through. It shows you the class of the man too as he sent a letter thanking everybody and moved on.

“You wish him well but sometimes it’s the wrong person at the wrong club. It wasn’t working and both sides have gone in different directions.”
