Alex McCarthy jokes he ‘enjoyed watching’ Southampton victory in thinly-veiled dig at Sheffield United

Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy aimed a thinly-veiled dig at Sheffield United following his side’s 3-0 victory over the rock-bottom Blades on Sunday.

The Saints breezed to victory over Chris Wilder’s men thanks to goals from Che Adams, Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond and leapfrogged Chelsea to go third in the Premier League.

The result, which was United’s 11th defeat of the season, piled more pressure on Chris Wilder, whose side are close to equalling a wretched ninety-year record set by Manchester United.

And McCarthy couldn’t resist poking a light-hearted dig at his side’s opponents following the match for his lack of action throughout the encounter.

The Englishman wrote: “Great team performance today… enjoyed watching that.”

Wilder admitted he had no complaints about the result at St. Mary’s.

He told Sky Sports: “We were beaten by the better side, a team full of confidence, some good players and playing at the top of their game. Obviously we’re not.

“They’re a good side, a really good side. I’m not deflecting anything from us. We’re in a bad run.

“Individually players aren’t playing anywhere near where they can play.”
