And it was Ronaldo who shone brightest, as he scored two penalties to lead Juventus to a 3-0 success over the Spanish giants.

His first came on 13 minutes when he was felled in the box by Ronald Araujo and stepped up to send Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way from 12 yards.

Juventus then doubled their lead through Weston McKennie before Ronaldo added another from the penalty spot after the intervention of VAR.

Barcelona had needed to simply avoid defeat by three goals to finish top of the group.

But they were unable to do so and the humbling reverse means Ronald Koeman’s side miss out on a seeding spot in the last-16 draw.

This was the first meeting between Messi and Ronaldo in two years and the 36th in total, including club and international appearances.

Ronaldo, 35, is now at 650 goals in his club career while Messi – two years his junior – is on 641.

They are the only players to have scored more than 100 goals in the Champions League/European Cup and boast the same number of hat-tricks in the competition (8).
