QPR players take the knee to celebrate goal against Millwall after boos at The Den last weekend

QPR players celebrated their opening goal against Millwall by taking the knee just days after supporters at The Den booed the gesture.

There were shock scenes in south east London on Saturday as some of the 2,000 fans returning to The Den audibly jeered as the players took the knee ahead of Millwall’s defeat by Derby.

It was a much more positive sight on Tuesday evening as supporters applauded the QPR and Millwall players as they stood arm-in-arm before kick-off holding a banner which read: ‘inequality – united for change’.

Some QPR players also took the knee pre-match, before Ilias Chair and Bright Osayi-Samuel made the gesture in support of Black Lives Matter after the former opened the scoring at The Den.

The Lions equalised through Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, but they are now winless in nine matches. Nonetheless, they remain in 14th place, three points ahead of Tuesday’s opponents.

“That was their own choice,” said QPR manager Mark Warburton on his players taking the knee to celebrate the goal. “These guys are men, not kids, who make their own decisions.

“I thought tonight you saw a really good reaction for what is such an important subject.”

The Hoops boss added: “I thought it was a great reaction from everyone concerned. It showed two teams united against any form of discrimination.

“A lot of credit must go to Millwall and QPR as clubs, the two CEOs have been talking regularly and you saw the players stand shoulder-to-shoulder against that.”
