Jurgen Klopp reveals Joel Matip will be out for three weeks through injury with Liverpool braced to enter January transfer window

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Joel Matip will miss three weeks through injury after suffering an adductor strain against West Bromwich Albion.

The Cameroon international missed the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United just three days later as the Reds lost ground in their race to retain their Premier League crown.

Mohamed Salah endured a miserable evening on Tyneside as the battling Magpies fought their way to a goalless draw with the Premier League champions.

The Egypt international missed the target either side of half-time with just keeper Karl Darlow to beat, and strike-partner Roberto Firmino, who saw two headers superbly saved, was similarly profligate at St James’ Park.

Three days after lowly West Brom struck late to snatch a point at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s men – who have now won only two of their eight league away games this season – were frustrated once again, although it took a late goal-line clearance from Fabian Schar and Darlow’s brilliance to keep them at bay.

Although Virgil van Dijk has entered the light rehabilitation stage after his debilitating knee injury, Klopp confirmed there was yet more defensive woe to deal with after the draw at St James’ Park.

Asked for an update on his fitness, Klopp told his post-match press conference: “The normal stuff with these kind of injuries, [he will be out for] around about three weeks.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp could not fault his players after they created chance after chance away from home, but were denied by the brilliance of Darlow.

He added: “We found a lot of solutions in the game and created unbelievable chances. You have different draws and this one I’m not happy with the result but I am happy with the performance.

“They defended with all they had but still we were alone in front of the goal, we just couldn’t finish them off.

“I’ve watched a lot of football matches. You have to respect the result. I know the boys will finish off those situations if they get them again, and we will win football games.”

The Reds sit three points clear at the top of the table in 2020, but Manchester United have a game in hand still to play as the race for the title heats up.
