Liverpool’s injury crisis deepened on Sunday as a Joel Matip’s back problem left them with no recognised centre-backs on the pitch at Fulham.
Jordan Henderson dropped into defence alongside fellow midfielder Fabinho as Matip was forced off at half-time.
The Cameroonian joins Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, both of whom will be out for most of the season, in the treatment room, although the extent of Matip’s back injury is not yet clear.
It comes after Jurgen Klopp confirmed forward Diogo Jota will be out for six to eight weeks – but at least does not need surgery on the injury suffered during the Champions League dead rubber against Midtjylland.
“It’s better than we first thought, but then not as bad as we then thought,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
“He doesn’t need surgery, we don’t know exactly how long, but it’ll be one-and-a-half or two months.”
Liverpool have some huge fixtures on the horizon, including league matches against Manchester City and Manchester United and two meetings with league-leaders Tottenham, the first of which comes on Wednesday.
