Leeds got away with one on Sunday afternoon as they held on to beat Burnley who felt they were denied both a goal AND a penalty at Elland Road.
Patrick Bamford’s early penalty decided the match, but the Clarets will feel as if the points should have been shared if they got the rub of the green.
The Whites were leading 1-0 through Bamford’s spot kick when Sean Dyche’s side thought they had equalised.
Ashley Barnes latched onto a loose ball and fired it into the back of Illan Meslier’s net, with the Leeds goalkeeper dropping the ball which led to the chance.
Meslier dropped the ball under pressure from Ben Mee, who ended up on the ground after seemingly being fouled by the glovesman.
But when the referee blew his whistle as Barnes’ shot flew into the goal, it wasn’t to award Burnley a penalty – it was in fact to penalise the Clarets!
Mee was adjudged to have fouled Meslier, rather than be the victim of a foul, and Leeds were awarded the most fortuitous of free-kicks.
The decision understandably frustrated the Burnley players, with Barnes arguing with official Robert Jones after seeing his equalising goal denied.
The call clearly spurred on the Burnley players, who came out for the second half fired up and searching for an equaliser.
They dominated proceedings after the break, but Leeds held on to claim the win and move onto 20 points for the season – leaving Burnley just two points clear of the relegation zone.
