RB Leipzig defeat was the ‘last straw’ for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United tenure and Harry Maguire’s game has ‘deteriorated’ under him

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on borrowed time at Manchester United after their Champions League group stage exit, with fan discontent growing towards the club legend.

That’s according to Drivetime host Adrian Durham, who claims the 3-2 defeat against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night is the ‘final straw’ for his Old Trafford tenure.

“There’s no way the players that he did have at his disposal should be selected and put in a formation that was so shambolic as last night,” Durham passionately explained.

“There is only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to blame for that.

“How long do Manchester United fans keep this going based on the fact he just stuck his leg out at the Camp Nou in 1999 [Champions League final] and therefore he’s a hero.

“They’ve somehow they’ve turned that into this amazing idea that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who scored a goal as a sub is going to become the new Sir Alex Ferguson.

“They keep having these amazing results every now and again, but they’ve gone out of the group stage; that’s not good enough.

“A [Louis] Van Gaal would have gone for that. David Moyes would have definitely gone for that.

“It isn’t good enough for Manchester United. How long do they keep saying he needs time, he needs better players.

“His tactics were shambolic. After the first goal, why wasn’t he on the touchline ranting and raving, reshaping everything and making changes then?

“Why wasn’t there a big moan-up at [David] De Gea or [Harry] Maguire. He just sits there doing nothing.

“I’m puzzled as to how United fans keep on defending their man. There’s sentimentality and I do get that, there’s an emotional attachment and they really want him to do well.

“But last night surely for United fans it has to be the last straw, doesn’t it?”

Durham also laid the blame at Solskjaer’s door for Harry Maguire’s drop in form.

The England international became the most expensive defender in world football following his £80million transfer from Leicester last summer, and was then named captain just six months later.

But Maguire’s Old Trafford career has yet to reach the heights he hit at the King Power Stadium, and Durham thinks Solskjaer must take responsibility for that as well.

He added: “We had a caller on talkSPORT saying £80million defender Harry Maguire… well that’s what he cost at the time.

“His game has deteriorated under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. There’s no way you should be looking this bad.

“His interview afterwards, Harry Maguire, he was basically saying what are we doing playing three at the back.

‘We looked way better when we changed shape – that’s what he was saying in the interview.

“Whichever way you interpret it, I’m going to look at it like this. He was basically saying the manager got this wrong tonight, yeah we as players were pretty poor and I shouldn’t be involved in the mix-up with David De Gea.

“But they shouldn’t be sent out there [like that] knowing the opposition and knowing how smart the opposition [manager] coaches – he absolutely tore them to pieces in that first half.

“It was an embarrassment for Manchester United.”
