Tottenham need to be more aggressive under Jose Mourinho if they want to be title contenders, Tony Cascarino warns

Tony Cascarino believes Tottenham may only just make the top four if Jose Mourinho persists with his current style of play.

Since arriving in north London, Mourinho has set Spurs up as a more defensive team – leading to accusations that his side are boring to watch.

It has been fairly effective so far this season, admittedly, with the north Londoners being the early league leaders before a recent dip in form.

Over the last four games, Spurs have lost to Liverpool and Leicester while drawing with Crystal Palace and Wolves.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Molineux saw Tottenham score in the opening minute before trying to hold on for the win, only to concede with just four minutes left to play.

And ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino believes Spurs are making it hard for themselves to win games.

He told talkSPORT: “They very rarely got into areas that would hurt Wolves. I don’t think you can win enough football matches as the laws of the game make it very hard for you.

“Free-kicks are given against you so easily, yellow cards are given so easily, penalties are given so easily… All these things that can happen in your half and your 18-yard box means you are in trouble if you are a pragmatic team.

“Tottenham at their very best make the most of [Harry] Kane and [Heung-min] Son and keep giving them the tools to score because they will.

“If they don’t make enough chances, Tottenham will just about make the Champions League.

“I can’t see Tottenham being a title-winning team and Jose is not going to change his approach to the way they play. I can’t see it at all.”

Casc added: “Tottenham have been a club that have always played entertaining football; their history is stacked with having great flair teams and a great manner of playing.

“When George Graham got the job and they were a bit more pragmatic, and they did win a cup, but they didn’t really believe in the way they should be playing.

“Then this year they got to top of the league and there were still certain segments of Spurs fans that wouldn’t want to watch what they are seeing now.

“I was watching them last night and thinking that Tottenham should be a far more aggressive team.”

Cascarino also thinks it is expected of a top side to play entertaining football and there are just some clubs that wouldn’t stand for it.

He finished: “You can’t get away with it if you are a top six team, or expected to be a top six team, by playing drab football or it’s not pleasing on the eye.

“’Pragmatic’, ‘cautious’, or whatever word you want to use – there are teams that can’t do that.

Jamie O'Hara admits Jose Mourinho is doing a great job at Spurs but thinks his public 'digging out' of Dele Alli is killing his confidence

“If you think of Manchester United after Fergie, the style of play was questioned hugely because it was a club that was built on playing entertaining football and winning.

“That is across Europe; you can’t manage certain clubs and play a style that’s not pleasing on the eye. You are expected to play a much more attractive, front foot type of football.”
