Jose Mourinho will eclipse Mauricio Pochettino if he wins Carabao Cup with Tottenham says Trevor Sinclair, but Spurs fan disagrees and claims Poch ‘doesn’t get enough credit’

Jose Mourinho has the chance to do something at Tottenham that eluded Mauricio Pochettino during his five years at the club… win a trophy.

Pochettino came close to ending Spurs’ silverware drought, losing in the League Cup final in 2015 and then the Champions League final four years later.

The Argentine was axed in November 2019 and replaced with Mourinho who was tasked with winning trophies – as he has done throughout his entire career.

He moved one step closer to achieving that aim by making the Carabao Cup final with Spurs beating Brentford 2-0 on Tuesday.

Winning the EFL Cup means Mourinho could eclipse his predecessor, despite being in charge of Tottenham for just a fraction of the time Pochettino was manager.

talkSPORT pundit Trevor Sinclair believes this is the case, as winning silverware is the aim of any coach.

“The fact that Pochettino got to the final of the Champions League was a great achievement, but to not win it I think a lot of people will say they failed,” Sinclair told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“For me, they need silverware; they haven’t had silverware since 2008. It’s a big football club and you look at the stadium and the players playing for them.

“You look at the manager too. They say he’s a serial winner and he is.”

Winning the Carabao Cup would undeniably be a brilliant achievement for Mourinho in his first full season in charge of Tottenham.

But Sinclair believes the pressure on the Portuguese would still be in the background for him to win more.

“The pressure on managers in the Premier League, especially at one of the so-called top six clubs – and Tottenham fall into that category – is perpetual,” added Sinclair.

“You look at Mikel Arteta; he won the FA Cup and the Community Shield and only two or three weeks ago, before he got on this winning run of three games, his job was under pressure.

“I would imagine there’s going to be a lot of media scrutiny around Jose Mourinho for this final, but if he does win it I’m sure he’ll be holding up fingers to say how many trophies he’s won as he usually does.”

Sinclair’s comments had Spurs fans calling and texting in to talkSPORT to respond, with one phoning White and Jordan to disagree.

Pochettino was loved by the Tottenham fanbase and even though his time in north London did not result in any trophies, some supporters believe what he achieved should not be overlooked.

Gavin, the Spurs fan, said: “I don’t think [Mourinho] overtakes Pochettino in terms of achievements at Spurs just because he wins a trophy.

“I don’t think Pochettino gets enough credit for what he did at Spurs.

“I know we didn’t win a trophy and that’s what football is all about, but he laid the foundations for what Mourinho has taken over bringing in most of the players.

“We are playing in a different way that seems a bit more negative, but it is effective. I don’t think he overtakes Pochettino.”

talkSPORT host Simon Jordan challenged Gavin on his views, believing Pochettino has already got more than enough credit for what he did at the north London club.

The former Crystal Palace chairman said: “How much credit do you think Pochettino should be given? Ultimately, he’s linked with every big job and he’s got one of the marquee jobs in Europe.

“He hasn’t won anything, so how much more credit do you need to give him? He’s got the credit by the nature of a slightly inflated reputation based upon his mediocre deeds.”

Gavin replied: “When he was at Spurs and doing well he was the sought-after man. Man United were stalking him for months and months.”

Jordan added: “My point exactly. He’s being stalked by the biggest clubs on the back of half-decent achievements at Tottenham.

“Normally, to get these sort of jobs you have to win something.

“You should have won the league when Leicester won it!”
