A team’s style of play is not important, football is all about winning and Jose Mourinho is still one of the best in the world at it.
That’s according to Jonathan Woodgate, who has hit back at criticism of the Spurs manager’s stubborn tactics and has backed The Special One to end Tottenham’s 12-year wait for silverware.
Spurs have a chance to win their first trophy since 2008 after beating Brentford 2-0 on Tuesday to book their place in April’s Carabao Cup final.
Despite the result, Tottenham and boss Mourinho have faced criticism over another less than convincing performance against the Championship side, who earned praise from the Portuguese and had a potential game-changing goal chalked off for a tight offside call.
The north Londoners have come under fire throughout the season over their dogged displays, with former player Jamie O’Hara branding Tottenham ‘boring’ and ‘pathetic’ and some fans fuming over their dull displays.
And yet, Spurs find themselves only four points adrift of top spot in the Premier League and now in a final, with a great chance of ending their long wait for a trophy.

talkSPORT spoke to Woodgate – the man who got the winning goal for Spurs in their most recent trophy win, a 2-1 victory over Chelsea to lift the League Cup in 2007/08 – and he gave his backing to Mourinho and his apparently ‘dull’ style, insisting it’s results and trophies that count.
“Jose Mourinho takes the competition seriously,” the former Tottenham defender told the talkSPORT Breakfast.
“He won it four times, he’s a serial winner and those Spurs boys need to start winning trophies.
“They’ve had chances over the years and they’ve got another great chance now.
“Their style is different, but they haven’t won anything under different managers, so they might win something under this manager and Jose Mourinho has won league titles and Champions Leagues all over the world.
“Okay the style of football is not great, but they’re in a cup final and they’re only four points off the top of the table. He’s getting results, and that’s the most important thing in football.
“Players want to win games, they’re not bothered how they play, in my view.
“If I was a player now, all I’d want to do is win, and I don’t care how we win, no matter what style we play, as long as we win.
“Fans are different – fans want to be entertained – but at the end of the day what do they want to see: their team winning a trophy or not winning a trophy?
“Mourinho has done it all over the world, he did it at Inter Milan and they won the European Cup, he’s doing it at Spurs now and he will bring them success.
“That’s why they’ve brought him to Tottenham, he wins trophies.”
