Adrian Durham believes Phil Foden is the only Premier League star who is rivalling Bruno Fernandes for the Player of the Year award right now.
The Man City midfielder is the club’s top scorer in all competitions this season with eight goals, despite not always being a regular starter under Pep Guardiola.
Foden’s latest dazzling performance came when he netted the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Brighton on Wednesday.
The England international is one of the country’s most in-form players at the moment with four goals and two assists in his last five starts for City.
And talkSPORT host Durham has Foden down as a solid Player of the Year contender.
He told Thursday’s Drivetime: “It’s between him and Bruno Fernandes right at this moment in time. Others might emerge as well.
“When you look at it, this is a player who at the start of the season wasn’t necessarily trusted by his club manager, who got into all sorts of hot water on the international stage, and then basically had to reset himself – and how has he done that!
“Absolutely incredible. Twenty-two City appearances, eight goals in that time as well.
“City have not lost a game when he’s played the full 90 minutes and they’ve lost a few this season. So he’s got into the team on a regular basis lately, four goals in six games.
“They’re going well in the cup competitions, going well in the Champions League and going very well in the Premier League, all coinciding with Phil Foden being a regular starter for Manchester City.”
Durham insists Foden, who is hoping to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad at Euro 2020 this summer, has given City an ‘extra bite’.
He said: “They’ve been consistent of late, that’s my point.
“They’ve got so much energy, they’ve got so much drive about them when he’s playing. He’s brought that to the team.
“Without him they were almost one-paced really, relying on a brilliant pass from Kevin De Bruyne, which wasn’t necessarily coming. Most of the time it did, but not always.
“Phil Foden comes in and gives them an extra bite, extra energy, exactly where they need it at the top end of the pitch.”
