Bruno Fernandes scores identical goal to Eric Cantona’s iconic chip but Manchester United can only manage draw to Everton

Bruno Fernandes may reject the Eric Cantona comparisons but his splendid strike during Manchester United’s 3-3 draw to Everton will do nothing to silence them.

The Portuguese star did brilliantly to chip Toffees keeper Robin Olsen to give Man United a 2-0 lead on the stroke of half time, with Edinson Cavani opening the scoring.

Everton fought back well after the break and were level on 52 minutes thanks to quickfire strikes from Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez.

But the hosts came again with Scott McTominay restoring Man United’s lead but they missed the chance to move level on points with Man City with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring in the final minute of stoppage-time.

The result is a blow in Man United’s bid for a first title since Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge of the club. But Fernandes’ goal will have certainly sparked memories of better times at Old Trafford.

Watch the videos below to see just how similar Fernandes’ goal is to that iconic chip by Cantona back in December 1996.

The hosts will be wondering how they conspired to throw away victory here, especially having gone into half-time two goals up thanks to Cavani’s fine header and Fernandes’ moment of magic.

Everton came out fighting after the break and were level within seven minutes of the second half getting under way as Doucoure turned home from close range as David de Gea could only palm a weak Calvert-Lewin cross straight into the midfielder’s path.

Doucoure then turned provider as he fired the ball into Rodriguez, who controlled deftly before rifling home the equaliser.

It appeared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men were going to take the three points as Scott McTominay’s flicked header found its way into the corner, with question marks surrounding the keeping of Jordan Pickford’s stand-in.

But Everton hit back in the final moments of stoppage-time as Calvert Lewin chested down a free-kick from the left before beating De Gea to the ball to level the scores again.
