Jose Mourinho has been told he must start putting his faith in Dele Alli and Gareth Bale – and get them in the Tottenham team against Burnley this weekend.
Both players were on target in Spurs’ 4-0 thrashing of Wolfsberger on Wednesday night as they progressed to the Europa League last-16.
Alli and Bale have found Premier League minutes hard to come by under Tottenham boss Mourinho this season, starting a combined total of three games.
However, with Alli’s superb overhead kick and two assists against Wolfsberger – and Bale scoring in back-to-back Europa League games – former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara insists it’s time for Mourinho to get them in his first XI.
He told talkSPORT: “The standout performers were Dele Alli and Gareth Bale.
“Dele was fantastic. He got on the ball, he scored a brilliant overhead kick and then created two chances as well.
“So for me, it was him and Bale that have played themselves into the team. You have to give them a chance.
“The thing which frustrates a lot of Spurs fans is the changing all the time. I get it with the fixtures, you have to be careful with minutes with some of them.
“But that front four of [Heung-min] Son, [Harry] Kane, Bale and Dele Alli as a No.10, if you can get that playing and you can get that firing on all cylinders, it is a really lethal outfit of an attacking force.”
Tottenham are languishing in ninth place having lost five of their last six Premier League games.
But with Burnley on Sunday, and Fulham and Crystal Palace on the horizon, O’Hara believes Alli and Bale could shine for Spurs.
He added: “You’ve got to give it a chance. We’ve got three games coming up in the Premier League that are all winnable. Then you’ve got the big north London derby.
“So give them those games to really show what they can do. Bale looks like he’s turned a corner. So hopefully Bale and Dele Alli will both start at the weekend.
“What I loved to see last night was when Dele Alli picked it up in the No.10 position, he got on the half turn, Bale made a run, he put him in and he scored.
“That is how Tottenham play – quick, passing, through the lines. Get players on the run, get Son making runs beyond, get Bale making runs beyond and then be clinical.
“That’s what Spurs are about and that’s why Bale and Dele Alli need to start.”
