Jose Mourinho said it was ‘amazing’ to have Dele Alli back to his best, as the midfielder scored a wondergoal to help Tottenham sail through to the Europa League last-16.
But it appears not everyone is convinced, with a peeved Spurs fan branding the star a ‘hype job’ who offers NOTHING to the team.
It seems Alli is back in Mourinho’s good books after scoring a brilliant overhead kick and setting up two goals in Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over Wolfsberger, winning the tie 8-1 on aggregate.
It’s been a tough campaign for Alli, who was frozen out of the team by Mourinho and was then prevented from making an January exit amid reports of a possible move to PSG.
But he enjoyed the best game of the season so far as he sent a message to his manager and supporters with an eye-catching display, capped with a stunning goal, and Mourinho certainly seemed pleased with what he saw.
“The goal I don’t need to speak, because everyone watched it and I believe that all around the world on all these sports TV, people are going to watch it, no need to talk about it,” Mourinho said.
“For me, the globality of the performance is what matters. He played very well in every aspect of the game, he played very well.
“Of course he’s not fresh, which is normal due to the circumstances – injured, not training for a long time. But in this moment when we are going to play every three days, ten matches in March, to have Dele back at this level is amazing.”
Not everyone was happy after the victory, though, as regular Sports Bar caller GJ called into the show on Wednesday night to voice his frustration over the midfielder, who he says receives too much hype from fellow supporters.
And asked for his verdict on Alli, he did not hold back, saying he has ‘no pace, no power and can’t tackle’.
He told talkSPORT hosts Andy Goldsten and Jason Cundy: “Where was he against West Ham at the weekend? He came on for about 15 minutes, and alright you can’t do much in that time.
“But tonight, he played really well but I’m on all these forums and people are blowing so much smoke up this guy’s backside.
“I’m a season ticket holder and I’ve been watching Tottenham for 40 years, and Dele Alli sums up Tottenham – he’s a hype job who flatters to deceive.
“He’s got no pace, no power, he can’t tackle, he can’t go box-to-box.
“The only thing he really has got is a good little flick and the odd finish. He used to have the odd nutmeg and a late run into the box for a header, but he’s even lost that now.
“Tonight, fair enough, Dele Alli played well. But, for me, I can’t believe how much Spurs fans blow smoke up this guy’s backside.”
