Former Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista was left in tears during an emotional interview whilst discussing Valencia’s 3-0 defeat to Getafe on Saturday.
The damaging loss leaves the Spanish side perilously close to the LaLiga relegation zone, with Valencia now just six points off the drop after winning only three times in their last nine league games.
Gabriel, who spent three years in north London with the Gunners, played the full 90 minutes as goals from Mauro Arambarri, Jaime Mata and Carlos Alena inflicted Los Che their tenth league defeat of the season.
It is a spectacular fall from grace for Valencia, who won the Spanish title in 2004 under Rafael Benitez and have regularly competed in European competitions.
His eyes watering as he became visibly emotional, the Brazilian told Movistar Plus: “Hearing that is terrible, when you consider how big a club Valencia are and then to hear (about potential relegation) is awful.
“But we’re going to turn this around, we have many games left and we’re going to improve and return Valencia where they deserve to be.”
With tears still in his eyes and the emotion of the situation clearly getting to him, Gabriel was consoled by the club’s press officer off camera.
Former Watford boss Javi Gracia is in charge of Valencia and the Spaniard remained defiant amid rumours his job security is dwindling with every game.
He said after the game: “From my position, all I do is think about the next game, and prepare for it.
“I am not a problem for the club. I am worker and the club knows I want the best for the club and the best thing is to prepare for the next game.”
