Jesse Lingard backed for England recall as Man United loanee scores two goals on West Ham debut as fan labels him ‘Lingardinho’

David Moyes has backed Jesse Linagrd to earn an England recall after his stunning West Ham debut.

The on-loan Manchester United midfielder scored twice as the Hammers secured a 3-1 win over Aston Villa to close the gap on fourth-placed Liverpool to two points.

Lingard played a key role in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, but has not played for his country since June 2019.

West Ham boss Moyes said: “If he keeps that form up then it might be [England manager] Gareth coming knocking again.

“He will have his own ambitions and challenges to show people he is at a level and he showed a really good level, Ross Barkley is very much the same for Villa.

“There are a lot of people who are pushing hard to make the England squad for the Euros and why shouldn’t Jesse push if he’s in the form he is in tonight?

“If he keeps playing as well as he did he will do a brilliant job for West Ham and if he keeps going like that then he’ll get back into the England squad.

“I hope he can get back to that standard.”

West Ham are mounting a surprise push for European football having won five of their last six Premier League games.

The Hammers will be confident of maintaining their red-hot form with relegation-threatened Sheffield United up next.

Moyes added: “We have to go step-by-step, we are making a big step at the moment and the players we have got have improved no end.

“We are in a really good position. We are going to keep knocking on the door and see where we go.”

Lingard’s starring role went down a treat with fans, with one phoning talkSPORT to give him a new nickname.

“Lingardinho – what a player,” the happy Hammer roared on the Sports Bar (weekdays 10pm-12am), adding the club should sign him permanently in the summer.

“Everything he touched turned to gold, the geezer was unreal!”
