The way Chelsea fans brag about how they’re the only London team to have won the Champions League grates on Arsenal and Tottenham supporters. But not all of them it seems…
Sports Bar hosts Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy were left truly aghast at Arsenal fan Dan, who says he ‘wouldn’t mind’ seeing Chelsea win the Champions League this season.
Chelsea, who became European champions in 2012, advanced to the last eight of the competition as they cruised past Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.
Along with Manchester City and Liverpool, they’ve flown the flag well for Premier League sides on the continent but Andy and Jason are in no doubt that Chelsea would be unpopular winners of the competition in England.
Not Gooner Dan though, who says he’s developed a soft spot for the Blues having worked for their club’s TV channel in the past while his grandad was a fan of the west London club.
When asked if he’d like Chelsea to win the Champions League, Dan said: “I wouldn’t mind. I wouldn’t mind if they did win it.
“The reason being, I’m lucky enough to have worked with Chelsea TV, while Jason was there, and I’ve developed a bit of a soft spot for the club as it was a good period to work there.
“My grandad supported them and at the end of the day Arsenal can’t win it so it’s better than Manchester City or Liverpool.”
Dan was given an opportunity to redeem himself, Andy asking him if he’d like Chelsea to win it if the final was between them and Bayern Munich.
The caller replied: “I don’t know if I’d cheer but I’d be more happy if they won it than a German club.”
Dan then explained how he comes from a family of West Ham fans, so not only would he like to see Chelsea win the Champions League, he’d like to see the Hammers finish in the top four – as long as Tottenham don’t win anything he’s happy!
Andy and Jason finally got to Dan’s limit – he wouldn’t let Chelsea win the Champions League if it meant Arsenal finished outside the top four. Well, that’s something at least.
As Dan put down the phone, Jason said: “He sounds like a nice guy… he seems a bit lost.”
