Birmingham fans launch Peaky Blinders-esque aerial protest against chief executive during Watford defeat

Birmingham City fans staged an aerial protest against chief executive Xuandong Ren during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat against Watford.

Ren is not a popular figure among the Blues faithful having come under increased scrutiny from supporters since Aitor Karanka’s appointment last summer.

The former Middlesbrough boss lasted less than eight months in the hotseat, with Lee Bowyer taking over the reins at the relegation-threatened Championship side earlier this week.

And fans made their feelings crystal clear during the second half of the aforementioned clash with a plane carrying a banner calling for Ren to step down flown over Vicarage Road.

You sense that the banner, put together by fan group Blues Collective, was inspired by the popular British drama programme Peaky Blinders as it read: “BY ORDER OF BLUES FANS DONG MUST GO.”

Ken Sema, Nathaniel Chalobah and Andre Gray were all on target for the Hornets in a convincing win over Bowyer’s men.

Birmingham are currently three points clear of Rotherham in the final relegation spot, but Paul Warne’s side have four games in hand over their rivals.

The Blues have not featured in the third tier of English football since the 1994-95 campaign, but their Championship status is now in serious jeopardy.

A defiant Bowyer said after the game: “I don’t think it was a 3-0 game,” he said. “They started better than us they kept getting through our press first 10-15 minutes, they got the early goal but then we changed shape and I thought we matched them and at times we looked the more likely team to score next.

“They got some good blocks in front of goal and defended well, we moved it well at times and created chances.

“Even after the second one I thought we were on the front foot, We kept moving the ball and creating problems but that quality – Watford were more clinical.

“I think attempts we had more, for us to have more attempts at their ground, that showed we had a go but they took their chances better than us and that’s what happens in football.

“We will learn from it, these ain’t the games that will keep us in this division. We got a good win on Wednesday and [today] a good performance, ignoring the scoreline, I thought the performance was positive.

“Watford have come down from the Premier League, you can tell the difference, for me they are going straight back up they are very good, they defended their box very well you could tell in every aspect of their game.”
