Wigan went into administration last summer and finding new owners has been a tortuous process, with a proposed deal with a Spanish consortium collapsing in January.

But on Tuesday night it was announced that the UK-based company owned by Abdulrahman Al-Jasmi has now taken control of the club.

Wigan are currently in League One‘s relegation zone and have experienced all sorts of ups and downs since being relegated from the Premier League in the 2012/13 season which also saw them win the FA Cup.

Whelan took over the Latics in 1995 and guided them up the divisions to reach the Premier League ten years later.

The 84-year-old expressed his delight at the club being in new hands but now believes the work to get them back into the top flight starts now.

He told talkSPORT: “I was waiting for someone to come along and take them over because Wigan Athletic are Wigan Athletic. They [the fans] want someone who owns it, who’s interested, who loves the club.

“It wants an owner who’s interested in one thing and one thing only and that’s building Wigan Athletic and getting them back into the Premier League. Hopefully the club changes for the better.

“Wigan Athletic is Wigan Athletic. We’ve been a football club for a long time. I’ve got great, great memories of what Wigan Athletic did.”
