Dani Carvalho opened the scoring for Portugal after 64 minutes as they took a deserved lead when he curled in via a post.
Francisco Trincao made it 2-0 from the penalty spot with 16 minutes remaining after Marc Guehi’s foul on Goncalo Ramos.
England couldn’t fight their way back into the game and need a lot of things to go their way if they harbour any hopes of making it out of the group.

Portugal top the group on six points with Switzerland and Croatia both on three points.
Boothroyd’s side face Croatia on Wednesday needing to win and for Switzerland to lose against Portugal.
