Everton could overtake Liverpool and break into top four as Richarlison goal sees Toffees beat out-of-form Southampton

Liverpool may have got back to winning ways but Everton are still very much in touch with them having beaten Southampton 1-0 at Goodison Park.

An early strike by Richarlison, which saw him round Fraser Forster before firing home from an acute angle, was all that separated the two sides on Monday.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men barely got out of second gear against the struggling Saints, who managed just one shot on target.

However, they could have snatched an unlikely win with two late chances. Moussa Djenepo’s 84th-minute effort whistled just past the post, while Jordan Pickford saved to deny Jannik Vestergaard in stoppage-time.

Michael Keane thought he’d doubled Everton’s lead midway through the first half but his header was disallowed as provider for the goal, Mason Holgate, was offside in the build-up.

But one goal was all the home side needed as they moved level on points with Liverpool. The Toffees have played a match less than their Merseyside rivals…
