Jamaal Lascelles scores injury-time goal to rescue point for relegation-threatened Newcastle against Aston Villa

Jamaal Lascelles scored an injury-time equaliser to rescue a point for Newcastle in a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Friday night.

The Magpies captain rose highest to head past Emiliano Martinez with the last attack of the match after a Ciaran Clark own goal had given Villa an 86th-minute lead.

Newcastle and Aston Villa were both toothless in attack for the majority of the contest at St James’ Park.

A long-range shot from Ryan Fraser and Trezeguet stinging Martin Dubravka’s palms were the best efforts of a dull first-half.

The second-half did not offer much else either with Martinez doing well to deal with a powerful back header from his own player, Matt Targett.

Joelinton was also played through on goal, but chose to cut the ball back instead of shooting in the 72nd minute.

Substitute Jacob Murphy almost made an instant impact for Newcastle when he hit the crossbar from close-range with eight minutes remaining.

And Newcastle’s luck really looked out when Targett’s cross was directed towards goal by Ollie Watkins, whose header took a huge deflection of former Villa defender Clark to beat Dubravka.

And when Newcastle looked to be heading for a costly defeat, Lascelles emphatically headed in Murphy’s cross in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Despite the late leveller, it is just two wins from 17 Premier League matches for Newcastle.

The Magpies, who are two points above the relegation zone, will end the weekend in the bottom three if Brighton and Fulham beat Southampton and Man City, respectively.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa missed the chance to leapfrog Liverpool into eighth place.
