Borussia Dortmund almost signed Kylian Mbappe from Monaco on a FREE TRANSFER back in 2016.
That is according to former Arsenal scout Sven Mislintat, who worked as a chief scout at Dortmund and sought to bring the France superstar to the Westfalenstadion when he was in Germany.
Mbappe made his debut for Monaco in December 2015 and scored his first goal the following year, breaking Gunners legend Thierry Henry’s records as the youngest player to do both at the club.
The current Paris Saint-Germain ace was, incredibly, available to be bought for free before he signed a three-year professional contract at Stade Louis II.
And Arsenal’s former head of recruitment Mislintat, who left the Emirates Stadium in 2019, has revealed just how close he came to bringing Mbappe to Dortmund.
He said on the Kicker meets DAZN podcast: “It was a real shame that we couldn’t get Kylian in.
“Kylian Mbappe was [available] free of charge at a certain point and there were many suitors. But we had no chance of winning that [race].
“If you had been able to steal Mbappe from Monaco for free at the time, it would of course have been a mega deal.”
The Frenchman truly burst onto the scene the following scene when he hit a stunning 26 goals in 44 matches to help Monaco win Ligue 1 and reach the Champions League semi-finals under boss Leonardo Jardim.
PSG then splashed £153million to make him the second-most expensive transfer of all time.
Since then he has rewarded the French giants with a stunning 120 goals in 160 matches.
He helped the club reach the Champions League final last term, where they were beaten by an undefeated Bayern Munich team, and also scored a brilliant hat-trick to down Lionel Messi’s Barcelona at the Camp Nou in February.
