Mourinho says it is a ‘pity’ referees are not interviewed after games as he slams ‘important’ Tottenham players for ‘hiding’ in north London derby defeat to Arsenal

Jose Mourinho took aim at referee Michael Oliver and his Tottenham players after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

Martin Odegaard had cancelled out Erik Lamela’s outrageous rabona goal, before Lacazette gave the Gunners a 64th-minute lead from the penalty spot after he was clumsily fouled by Davinson Sanchez.

The Tottenham defender made contact with the Frenchman after he had sliced his shot wide, something Mourinho clearly took issue with in his post-match press conference.

The Portuguese coach bemoaned Oliver’s decision and slammed his own players for ‘hiding’ at the Emirates as Gareth Bale and Tanguy Ndombele were early withdrawals in the second-half.

He told Sky Sports: “No post-match interviews for referees? That’s a pity. We played really badly in the first half.

“The 1-1 was not a fair reflection of the first half. We were poor, defending badly, no intensity, not pressing. In terms of creating attacking football, some important players were hiding.

“The first half was really bad. In the second half, we only had space to improve, which we did.

“And then it’s a question for… an impossible question because they don’t speak, but it would be a question for Michael to answer.

“Probably Paul Tierney, too, because he was the VAR. According to [the fourth official] Kevin Friend, the referee was told he had a clear vision and the VAR didn’t want to go against him.

“But let’s go back to the beginning, we were poor in the first half. We recovered what we lost in the first half, which was the control of the game.”

It got worse for Tottenham after Lacazette’s goal when Lamela picked up a second yellow card with 14 minutes to go.

Harry Kane and Sanchez went close late on as Mourinho tasted defeat in a north London derby for the first time.

The Portuguese coach insisted Arsenal fans would be the only people who thought Sanchez’s challenge on Lacazette was a penalty.

He added: “What I saw from the bench, I had a feeling, but of course, I am 40, 50 metres away.

“So I think referees have quite a difficult job sometimes. I didn’t complain because he’s closer than me, but when I watched on the iPad, it is what it is.

“If somebody has a different opinion, it’s one of the big Arsenal fans with the season tickets, it’s the only one that I would accept a different view from because that’s the passion speaking.

“Apart from that, I wouldn’t accept that anyone has a different view because it’s too obvious.”
