Brendan Rodgers ‘fits the mould’ of what Tottenham need as Troy Deeney says new manager must ‘excite’ Harry Kane to ensure he stays beyond this summer

Brendan Rodgers would bring a playing style to Tottenham that the fans crave and could be the man to ‘excite’ Harry Kane and convince him to stay at Spurs this summer.

That is the view of Watford striker and talkSPORT co-host Troy Deeney, who believes the Leicester boss fits the ‘mould’ of what kind of coach is needed as Daniel Levy searches for Jose Mourinho’s permanent successor.

Spurs squandered the chance to claim their first silverware in 13 years on Sunday as Aymeric Laporte’s late header sealed Manchester City a fourth Carabao Cup in a row at the expense of the Lilywhites at Wembley.

The result has led to calls for the England captain to seek a transfer from the north London club in order to enhance his own personal ambition to win trophies.

Deeney, however, believes a manager who could bring an exciting style of play could be enough to convince Kane to remain at Tottenham.

“I genuinely think if I was the owner of a football club I’d look for someone in the mould of Brendan Rodgers,” the 32-year-old told talkSPORT’s Breakfast show.

“He can develop young players and has a track record of doing well with younger talent from different leagues.

“Year on year he’s developed his coaching style – but it depends what Spurs want.

“Having known quite a few Spurs fans, they all want a style and want to be excited. They don’t want to watch the football they’ve been watching – that’s not what their about.

“They need a young manager and somebody that’s ultimately going to have to excite Harry Kane because otherwise he’ll leave.”

Last week, Rodgers dismissed links to the Tottenham job.

Quizzed on the speculation of a switch to north London, he said: “It’s football, there is always speculation around, every job which comes up there will always be different managers speculated to go in.

“Tottenham is a fantastic club, it’s a huge club but my focus is here. I’m at a world-class training facility, the project we’re in here we still want to develop and have a lot of work to do.

“I have a great connection with the players, the board and we have plans to keep progressing.

“While I have the energy, the happiness and see that challenge continuing I’m very happy to be here. You can’t stop gossip but I don’t think about it.”
