Arsenal have confirmed that David Luiz has undergone a small procedure on his right knee with the defender set to return in the ‘upcoming weeks.’
The 33-year-old Brazilian missed the Gunners’ 3-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday, after which Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta said could see him miss the rest of the season.
However, the injury is not thought to be as bad as first feared and he could return for the crucial remaining games of the season.
In a statement, Arsenal wrote: “David Luiz underwent a small procedure on his right knee on Sunday morning.
“The proceure has been a success and David is now back at home rehabilitating. He will be able to return to daily support and recovery with our medical team at the training centre in the coming days.
“David is expected to be back to full fitness and available for selection in the upcoming weeks.”
Areteta admitted he had concerns that Luiz could miss the remainder of the season following the Emirates defeat.
He said: “There are a few possibilities – being a little bit more conservative on the treatment, or having to go through surgery.
“We are talking with the doctors right now to make the right decision on that, but it looks like he will be out for a few weeks at least.
“It depends on what decision we will take. If it’s more conservative it will be short-term, if it’s a little bit more radical what he needs, obviously it will take longer.”
With a quartet of key players missing in Luiz, Granit Xhaka, Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, Arteta admitted his side got what they deserved following their comprehensive defeat to Liverpool.
He said: “I think Liverpool completely deserved to win the game, probably with a bigger margin because they were much better than us in every single department and we were extremely poor today.
“I don’t know if it was the worst (performance of my reign), but probably one of the worst and the one that really shocked me.
“I think every defeat is different. This one hurts deeply because of the image that we showed today and the lack of clarity that we wanted to get out from this game.
“We need to apologise to our people, to our fans, and this standard is nowhere near what we want. I am fully responsible for that.”
