Leicester strengthen top-four hopes with thrashing of West Brom as Sam Allardyce edges closer to first ever relegation as a manager

Leicester strengthened their grip on a top-four place with a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened West Brom on Thursday evening.

Goals from Jamie Vardy, Jonny Evans and Kelechi Iheanacho inside 36 minutes ensured the Foxes moved four points clear of fifth-placed West Ham.

The result has pushed West Brom closer to relegation as Sam Allardyce looks set to suffer a first ever relegation as a manager.

The Baggies are nine points from safety with just six matches left to play.

Leicester and West Brom could have broken the deadlock inside the opening stages of the contest.

Iheanacho robbed Dara O’Shea of possession inside his own half and raced through on goal, but was denied by Sam Johnstone, who did well to force the striker wide.

And at the other end, Matheus Pereira picked out Mbaye Diagne inside the box, but the on-loan Galatasaray forward miskicked his shot at a crucial moment.

That miss came back to haunt Allardyce’s side as Vardy scored his first goal in 12 matches when he latched on to a Timothy Castagne pass and slotted past Johnstone in the 23rd minute.

Leicester doubled their lead just three minutes later as Youri Tielemans’ corner deflected off a West Brom player and into the path of Evans, who headed in his first Premier League goal since December 2019.

And Brendan Rodgers’ men had their third goal when Iheanacho hammered home a Vardy cutback in the 36th minute.

It is now 13 goals in as many matches for Iheanacho, who is Leicester’s top scorer with 16 this season.

The second-half did not match the first 45 minutes with Big Sam bringing on defender Semi Ajayi for striker Callum Robinson at the break to keep the scoreline down.

Leicester comfortably saw out the game with Iheanacho coming close to adding a second goal to his name.
