Teddy Sheringham has told talkSPORT there is ‘no way’ Ryan Mason will be given the Tottenham job on a permanent basis if he ends their 13-year trophy drought on Sunday.
The 29-year-old won his first game in interim charge since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho with a 2-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday.
Mason will face a much tougher test, though, when his Tottenham side take on Premier League leaders Man City in the Carabao Cup final, which is LIVE on talkSPORT.
Sheringham, who scored 97 Premier League goals in two spells with Tottenham, insists his former club have a chance of pulling off a shock result.
He told Drive: “It’s two fantastic sides. They’re both in very different states at he moment.
“With one manager going and the youngest manager every coming in, he’s got a massive job on his hands.
“Pep Guardiola has taken football to a whole other level since he’s come to England.
“It’s a big ask for Ryan Mason and Tottenham this weekend. But they’ve got a chance of winning.”
Mason could end the season with a Carabao Cup winners’ medal and a top-four finish under his belt.
But can Sheringham see Mason getting the full-time job if Tottenham beat Man City?
He replied: “I wouldn’t have thought so. No way.
“It’s just a situation where you need to be an experienced man to have this job. I’m sure it’ll hold him in high esteem if he does win it.
“He’ll get back to his coaching at the end of the season and do his badges and get his experience throughout Tottenham.
“But I doubt very much that he would get the job if they won it.
“You couldn’t wish for a tougher team to play against in a Cup final. You know you’re going to get worked.”
