Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals what he’s told Edinson Cavani to convince him to stay at Manchester United but Alan Brazil says ‘he’s not the answer’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he was doing all he can to get Edinson Cavani to stay at Manchester United after he underlined just how important he is to the team.

The Uruguayan starred for the Red Devils in an incredible eight-goal thriller, which saw them come back from 2-1 down against Roma to win 6-2 in their Europa League semi-final first leg.

Cavani scored twice, set up two more and also won a penalty in a destructive performance and one of his best in a United shirt.

The 34-year-old joined United on a one-year deal, with the option of a further year, after leaving Paris Saint-Germain – as the French club’s all-time top goalscorer – on a free transfer.

He has 12 goals in 33 games in all competitions, even though 16 of those appearances have come from the bench.

Cavani’s influence on the team has been obvious and manager Solskjaer has revealed how he has been trying to sell another year in Manchester amid reports he wants to return to South America.

“Edinson was out for seven months and not playing football for a very long time before he came to us,” Solskjaer said after Cavani’s demolition of Roma.

“He’s had a couple of injuries and has worked really hard to show his quality.

“He knows my feelings, he knows that I would love to have him for another year, we have spoken about it. I understand this year has been very difficult, but I promised him that Old Trafford and Manchester is a different place with fans in the stadium.

“I’m doing my best, nights like this [help], hopefully we can get to the final and hopefully he can see himself being here for another year.”

Asked what more he could do to secure Cavani’s future, Solskjaer replied: “We don’t have to sell the club to him. It’s about the feeling he gets coming into training every day, the environment we created, the team we are creating that he is a part of.

“He has to feel what it’s like to score those goals at the Stretford End with fans, it’s a different feeling.

“We’ve got the best fans and, as a goalscorer, there is no better feeling than scoring and celebrating in front of them.”

But talkSPORT host, and former United striker, Alan Brazil believes Cavani is NOT the answer to their problems.

“Manchester United under the Fergie reign were the team to beat and, if they’re going to get back to that, they can’t rely on Cavani,” said the talkSPORT Breakfast host.

“Cavani is a great player, ten years ago I wanted to see him in the Premier League.

“They have to be bigger than that now. If he’s going to go at the end of the season, they should slap him on the back and say ‘you’ve been great for us, thank you’.

“He has it, but not to topple Man City and be champions of Europe. I’m talking the Champiosn League.

“No, he’s not the answer.”
