Rangers manager Steven Gerrard tipped to take Tottenham job before replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool but Spurs have ‘no chance’ of getting Marcelo Bielsa

Steven Gerrard could replace Jose Mourinho at Tottenham before taking over at Liverpool, believes Tony Cascarino.

Spurs are currently in the process of recruiting a new manager, with a decision set to be made at the end of the current Premier League season.

A number of names are being spoken about with RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann in the running, along with Brendan Rodgers, and former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

It will be a vital appointment for Tottenham, who have named former player Ryan Mason as their temporary head coach, as fans became despondent with the defensive football under Mourinho.

A new boss with an attacking philosophy is a must, while a younger manager may also be required given how the Portuguese struggled to get some stars like Dele Alli on his side.

And former Premier League forward Tony Cascarino reckons Gerrard may just be the right man as he continues his path to top in his managerial career.

He told talkSPORT on the Weekend Sports Breakfast: “You can throw names out there. You can suggest people, which I do, but without much conviction because you don’t know what the club are thinking.

“You don’t know what their idea of what type of manager they want in. Obviously, success and a name because you have to appease the fans. You have to give them someone who excites the fans.

“I mentioned [Marcelo] Bielsea. No chance he would leave Leeds. He’s at a great football club. He’s done an incredible job there but I would love to see that type of manager.”

He continued: “I’m not sure on [Julian] Nagelsmann because I’ve watched his Hoffenheim team and I’ve watched Leipzig and I’ve said it’s the dream draw if you want to play attacking football because they’re sometimes a bit gung-ho in his approach.

“I think it’s somewhere in the middle. I think Steven Gerrard, again he’s at an incredible football club in Glasgow Rangers, what he’s done and shown as a very young manager is that there is no doubt in my mind Steven Gerrard will go onto a very big job

“Most people will go ‘oh, that’s obvious, that’s Liverpool’ but there will be a club before Liverpool, I’m pretty sure.”

Meanwhile, Cascarino believes the dismissal appears to have been a weight off the Portuguese coach’s shoulders.

“It’s the happiest I’ve seen him. He’s been sacked and he was laughing,” he added.

“I thought ‘wow, was that a relief to you that you’re away from Spurs? Did thing, obviously behind the scenes, not really go that well?'”
