‘Awful’ Timo Werner has THREE of top five misses this season as Chelsea striker told Karim Benzema would’ve gobbled up chance against Real Madrid

If there was a highlight reel of the top five worst misses of the season, Timo Werner would have three of them.

That is the verdict of talkSPORT co-host Tony Cascarino, who believes the misfiring German is running out of chances to prove his worth at Chelsea following his £45million move from RB Leipzig last summer.

Werner has had a hand in more goals than any other Chelsea striker this season but, more often than not, he makes the headlines for the wrong reasons due to a string of glaring misses.

Earlier this week, he fluffed an effort from point blank range to put the Blues ahead against Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg, which finished 1-1 after Karim Benzema cancelled out Christian Pulisic’s opener.

And Cascarino reckons the 25-year-old will not want to see his higlight reel any time soon.

“If you asked me to tell you the top five misses of the season, I would put Timo Werner in three of them,” Casc told talkSPORT.

“He’s been pretty awful in front of goal. Like in midweek [against Real Madrid], Thibaut Courtois has made a great save in front of goal.

“I’m telling you, [Karim] Benzema scores there. As a forward I’ve been there and I’ve missed unbelievable chances myself. You will get criticised even if a goalkeeper makes an incredible save.”

Werner was urged to ‘put his chin up’ and ‘not to cry’ by Blues boss Tuchel earlier this week.

“He missed a big one in West Ham, now he missed another big one here,” said Tuchel, of Werner.

“That does not help, but it also does not help to cry about it or to regret it all the time; it is like this.

“There are millions of people who have harder things to deal with than chances that you miss, so this is the good thing about sports – nobody cares tomorrow.

“We were sad, we were angry in the moment, this is normal. He was angry. He may be disappointed. Now he has a free day and the next day he has to put his chin up.

“He is a professional guy a top guy, he works hard. He is in positions and from there on we go.

“We will never stop pushing, we will never stop believing and I have the feeling that everybody accepts the situation like it is and as a striker it is easy, you score the next game and nobody speaks about it.”
