Emma Hayes’ side got off to the worst possible start when they conceded a freak own goal after just 34 seconds.

Lieke Martens hit the crossbar with a fine effort from range as Chelsea failed to clear their lines before calamity struck.

Fran Kirby’s clearance inadvertently hit Melanie Leupolz and looped over Blues goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger for the opener.

Despite the early setback, Chelsea responded well through Pernille Harder, who fluffed her lines twice in the space of six minutes.

And those misses proved costly as Alexia Putellas doubled Barcelona’s lead from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Leupolz fouled Lieke Martens inside the box.

Barcelona were ruthless from there with Aitana Bonmati adding a third six minutes later as she clinically finished past Berger from close-range.

Lluis Cortes’ women scored the game’s fourth goal when Martens’ cutback from the byline was poked home by Caroline Hansen.

Chelsea’s frustration showed when Sophie Ingle received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Kheira Hamraoui.

Chelsea had opportunities to pull a goal back in the second-half, however, Harder and Sam Kerr were wasteful.

Both clubs were crowned champions of their respective domestic leagues last weekend, but it was Barcelona who came out on top in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Chelsea could take inspiration from Barcelona as the Spanish giants were beaten 4-1 by Lyon in the 2019 Champions League final, but bounced back two years later to avenge their heavy loss.
