Simon Jordan believes Derby should ‘sleep on it’ before deciding on Wayne Rooney’s future at the club.
The Rams avoided relegation to League One by the skin of their teeth following a 3-3 draw with Sheffield Wednesday which sent the Owls and Rotherham down in the process.
Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan was against Rooney’s appointment from the start – and famously said on talkSPORT that if the Rams wanted to get relegated then they should appoint the Manchester United icon.
Rooney and co managed to avoid the drop by a single point, but Jordan remains far from convinced regarding the former’s managerial capabilities – and believes he shouldn’t have highlighted the club’s off-field issues as a smokescreen to a poor campaign.
“In the first 16 games you get a bounce, because the players are reacting in a certain way, and he got 27 points,” Jordan said.
“The second 16 games, which is the business end of the season when you’re really knuckling down, he got 10 points. That’s relegation form in any parallel universe.
“I’m a big fan of Shay Given, I like him as bloke. Liam Rosenior is a very bright young coach and Wayne, I’ve no doubt, will learn and earn the right to be in management.
“But to talk clarity about the off-pitch stuff… the clarity we saw on the pitch was that the team was very poor.”
Jordan also rejected any notion that Rooney should be praised for keeping the club in the Championship .
He continued: “Another side’s [Rotherham] failure has kept you in the division, another side getting six points deducted [Wednesday] at the beginning of the season has kept you in the division.”
“The idea that Wayne Rooney could and should be the manager for next year… well, I’m not the Derby owner, but I would urge them to sleep on it.
“And if I woke up in the morning and still thought it was a good idea, I’d probably urge myself to go back to the bed. The idea that he is going to give you a solution is not there.
“Wayne is a top class footballer but 10 points from 16 games, at the business end of the season, is just not the credentials to suggest this guy can take the club forward.
“I could see why Wayne could do with more clarity there, but that doesn’t mean you produce ten points from 16 games on the pitch when you’ve got players like Martyn Waghorn who have cost a lot of money and got them out of trouble in the end.
“What you’ve seen there at Derby is staggeringly bad.”
Responding to the news of Derby’s dramatic survival on GameDay Exclusive, former Leeds defender Danny Mills echoed Jordan’s views that Derby should be considering Rooney’s future.
“It’s absolutely huge for Derby County football club that is for sure,” Mills said. “Is it down to Wayne Rooney or has it got a little bit lucky?
“I’d say he’s got a bit lucky towards the end, Rotherham were what four or five minutes from sending them both down?
“They’ve obviously had a big fightback after half-time and got themselves back into it in the end. I think big decisions have got to be made now at Derby.
“They brought Wayne Rooney in and they’ve somehow managed to get away with it this season.
“Now is the decision to make is he the right man for next season and beyond?”
