Edinson Cavani has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United, it has been confirmed.
The veteran striker has scored 15 goals in 35 appearances since joining the Red Devils on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last year.
Cavani was planning to leave Old Trafford when his contract expired at the end of the season and reportedly held talks with Boca Juniors over a move.
However, the 34-year-old has rejected offers from his native South America to stay at United for another year.
“Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents,” Cavani said.
“I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things.
“From the very first moment that I arrived, I felt the confidence of the manager. As a player, this belief gives you the perfect opportunity to play your best football and I want to thank him for that.
“I have been touched with how much the supporters have wanted me to stay, and I will give everything to bring them happiness and joy with my performances on the field. I’ve not yet been able to play in front of the Old Trafford crowd and that is something that I cannot wait to do.”
Cavani is likely to lead the line when United aim to end their four-year trophy drought against Villarreal in the Europa League final on May 26.
The Uruguayan has been in unstoppable form with eight goals in his last seven matches.
It will come as a huge boost to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who said of Cavani recently: “Edinson is more than just a goal poacher. He is excellent at running the channels, being the focal point and bringing others into play.”
Speaking on Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast, Ally McCoist insisted Cavani deserved a new contract… unless Man United were planning to sign Tottenham star Harry Kane this summer.
The former Rangers and Scotland striker said: “Cavani is flying, he’s absolutely flying.
“A goal at the weekend [against Aston Villa], goals against Roma and I just think when he’s playing like this he’s hard to touch. He really is.
“But he’s at a stage in his career now, Cavani, where the family will be more important to him than ever. It’s a tough one.
“He’ll be getting to a stage in his career, in his life, where he’ll clearly want to get back to the family to spend more time with them.
“If you’re asking me, should United offer him one more year? You’d have to say yes, unless, of course, they’re going to go out and get Harry Kane.”
