Dietmar Hamann unsure ‘immature’ and ‘embarrassing’ Paris Saint-Germain can win ‘big titles’ after Man City Champions League defeat

Didier Hamann has questioned whether Paris Saint-Germain will ever be good enough to win a first ever Champions League.

PSG were outplayed by Man City in the two Champions League semi-final legs with the French giants having a player sent off in each game.

Idrissa Gueye was sent off for a horror tackle on Ilkay Gundogan last week as Angel Di Maria saw red for stamping on Fernandinho in the return leg, while star man Neymar failed to leave his mark on the big stage.

Former Man City midfielder Hamann is unsure where PSG go from here after their most recent Champions League elimination.

He told talkSPORT: “Mauricio Pochettino was brought in to bring them together.

“When you look at a team, you’ve got to trust your players. I’m not too sure, when he looks at his team now, the way they reacted yesterday and last week, where they go from there.

“They’re pretty much together as a team as they are now and the side they showed in both games, I’m not too sure whether they’re ready to win a big title with that squad.”

With City 4-1 up on aggregate on Tuesday night, PSG stars lost their heads in the latter stages of the match and were fortunate to leave the pitch with 10 men.

Hamann called PSG’s temperament ‘embarrassing’ as Pochettino struggled to control his players.

He told talkSPORT: “I think immaturity is the word. They’ve always been accused of not being a team and having that side to them.

“In the Champions League last year, they turned the game around against Atalanta in the last two minutes when they scored twice, everybody said, ‘this is the Paris we want to see. They’re united together’.

“But they showed their whole side yesterday and it was pretty embarrassing in the last 15 minutes when they had those little fouls and left their foot in and tried to elbow people.

“Di Maria was sent off, [Presnel] Kimpembe probably should have gone, Danilo [Pereira] had a bad tackle. So they could have had two or three players sent off.

“The most important thing in these big games is you’ve got to have your emotions under control, if you haven’t then you can’t control your opponent.

“That’s what eventually cost them. But you’ve got to say City were in a different league over the two legs.”
