Edinson Cavani welcomed Manchester United fans back to Old Trafford in the most perfect way possible, before Fulham’s Joe Bryan spoiled the mood in an entertaining 1-1 draw.
After 14 months of no supporters at the Theatre of Dreams, the Uruguayan scored a goal which made the long wait worthwhile.
Almost longer was the distance from which Cavani chipped Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, sparking incredible scenes among the 10,000 in attendance.
The 34-year-old, playing in front of United fans for the very first time, gave them something to savour after spotting Areola off his line and executing the perfect dink from around 50 yards out.
Goals such as that deserve a crowd, and with Old Trafford empty since March 2020, the celebrations made it sound like a full house.
However, the Red Devils crowd were silenced by a second-half equaliser from Joe Bryan, who made sure that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will have to wait before they can confirm second place.
In more unfortunate news for Cavani, United handed out their Goal of the Season award earlier today.
It went to Bruno Fernandes for a similarly audacious effort, albeit much closer, during the 3-3 draw with Everton in February.
Fernandes also beat Cavani to the Player of the Season award, with the Uruguayan finishing third behind Luke Shaw.
We wonder what the outcome would’ve been if United fans voted tonight…
