Joao Cancelo should NOT have been sent off at Brighton, says ex-Man City star Danny Mills

Manchester City may be a goal to the good at Brighton but will go into the half time break feeling hard done by.

However, the course of the Amex Stadium clash changed hugely on the ten-minute mark as City were reduced to ten men.

Joao Cancelo was given a straight red card for dragging down Danny Welbeck after misjudging the flight of a long ball.

Referee Stuart Atwell didn’t hesitate in giving the Portuguese defender his marching orders.

But despite this and VAR upholding Atwell’s decision, former City full-back Danny Mills believes Cancelo is unlucky to receive a red card.

Mills believes the referee and VAR were wrong though

Mills said on live commentary for talkSPORT: “Welbeck puts his arm across him first. Where can Cancelo put his arms?

“I’m not convinced that’s a red card. It’s a coming together at that stage, it’s not deliberate, he doesn’t mean to bring him down, Welbeck nudges him first.

“I’m not convinced there’s enough in that for a red card.”

Hat-trick hero from their outing at Newcastle Ferran Torres was forced to make way as Pep Guardiola brought on Eric Garcia to shore up the defence.

City haven’t had it their own way, with Phil Foden getting their most notable chance apart from their goal.

Meanwhile, Brighton could have levelled just after the half hour mark but Pascal Gross made a hash of Jakub Moder’s lay-off on the right.
