Gareth Southgate will name a revised expanded provisional squad for the upcoming European Championship on Tuesday.
The Three Lions boss was expected to finalise his final 26-man squad for Euro 2020 this week, but he will now name an initial squad containing more than 30 players.
That will give Southgate time to assess the injuries within his squad after the Champions League and Europa League final respectively, before trimming down his squad in time for UEFA’s deadline at midnight on June 1.
UEFA has raised squad limits from 23 to 26 men amid the coronavirus pandemic, although Southgate would not be drawn on whether he would use the full allocation.
“COVID-19 could play a part but there is a skill to picking 23 and it means you’ve got to make good decisions and important decisions,” Southgate said.
“Some of that can be lost as you get an extended group, so let’s see how that develops but I’m not 100 per cent for that, I have to say.”
There are doubts over Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips and Nick Pope’s involvement in the tournament owing to injury.
