Jorginho howler gifts Arsenal shock win at Chelsea as Thomas Tuchel’s men miss chance to cement top-four spot

If your name is Jorginho, we strongly advise you not to tune in to Match of the Day tonight.

The Italian produced a howler of the season contender to gift Arsenal all three points against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

Shortly after Kai Havertz spurned a glorious one-on-one opportunity to put the Blues ahead, Jorginho failed to lift his head before overhitting a pass towards Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard, who was handed a rare start in the league ahead of the FA Cup final vs Leicester on Saturday, actually did remarkably well to get a hand on it to clear it off the line but Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang was on hand to pass it to Emile Smith Rowe to tap home.

It was definitely one of the gaffes of the season, and questions have also been raised as to whether the referee should have blown for a back pass as Kepa cleared it off the line using his hands.

You can look at the incident, below…

Moments later, there was more controversy as Mason Mount had a shot from point blank range blocked by what appeared to be Rob Holding’s hand.

His effort was going towards the goal and clearly struck Holding’s hand, which was in an unnatural position.

It was a frantic first 25 minutes and poor for Chelsea, who failed to cement their spot in the top four.

The hosts thought they had finally got back on level terms after the interval when Christian Pulisic scrambled in at the far post on the hour from a corner. But VAR ruled out the effort for offside.

Chelsea continued to dominate but their quest for an equaliser seemed doomed to failure.

And when Pulisic failed to connect properly at the far post with the net all but at his mercy, a night of major frustration appeared almost complete.

One more goalmouth scramble saw Leno tip the ball onto the bar from a Zouma header – and replacement Olivier Giroud struck the bar from point-blank range with the rebound.
