Lord Alan Sugar says fan involvement at board level is ‘totally ridiculous’ as Tottenham announce plans to appoint supporter as non-executive member

Tottenham have taken the bold step of creating a role to bring fans to the club’s board – but it wouldn’t be happening if Lord Alan Sugar was still in charge.

There’s been a fresh drive to include supporters in the decision-making process for their clubs in the wake of the unpopular European Super League’s collapse.

Spurs apologised for not consulting fans in the ESL process and outlined plans to create a Club Advisory Panel made up of elected fans.

The panel’s chair would be appointed as a full non-executive member of the club’s board and would have complete voting rights, including on key football decisions.

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust rejected the proposal as its members have called for the club’s board to resign.

Unsurprisingly, the club say this is not on their agenda and plan to press ahead with their new idea.

Former Spurs owner Lord Sugar is wholly against the idea though, insisting fans lack the required expertise to have a seat at the board’s table.

“That is totally ridiculous, fans on the board,” Lord Sugar told talkSPORT. “Absolutely totally ridiculous.

“At Tottenham, now we’ve got a new stadium at 60,000 capacity, we’ve got 60,000 managers, who all know best(!)

“You don’t want them anywhere near the board. The board has got to be controlled by the owners and at best has got to have a director of football that’s actually been in football, understands football.

“At the tail end of my ownership of Tottenham, I had Martin [Peters], as one of our ex-players and on the board and I had David Pleat on the board – people of knowledge who know what they’re talking about.”
