Manchester United and England sweating on Harry Maguire’s fitness as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits defender’s injury could leave him out for ‘a few weeks or a month’

Harry Maguire could miss the Europa League final and is potentially facing a race against time to be fit for Euro 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested.

The defender sustained an ankle injury during Manchester United’s win at Aston Villa on Sunday. Maguire hobbled off in the 78th minute of the match after a collision with Anwar El Ghazi.

There’s no official diagnosis but the early signs don’t look good with Solskjaer saying he expects Maguire to be out for a few weeks or even a month.

“Hopefully [the Europa League final] will be okay with Harry but I don’t know,” Solskjaer said.

“We need to check it. It might be a few weeks or a month — we don’t know.

“It was his calf or lower leg. I think the player landed on him and he twisted something.”

It would be a huge blow for Man United, who have a Europa League final date with Villarreal on May 26.

Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate will also be worried with England’s first match at Euro 2020 on June 13.

“Harry has been excellent and it’s almost unheard of, the minutes he’s played,” Solskjaer added. “His fitness is very good and he’s robust. But, today, it looked like the boy landed on him and he twisted his ankle.

“I don’t know how serious it is. He might be available on Tuesday, he might not.”

Other than the Maguire knock it was a successful outing for the Red Devils, who came from behind to claim a 3-1 win at Villa Park.

Bertrand Traore’s stunning goal put the home side in front but a penalty from Bruno Fernandes levelled the scores. Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani got on the scoresheet to seal the win and make Manchester City wait a little longer for their Premier League crown.

Man United are in the middle of a very busy run of fixtures, having played in the Europa League semis on Thursday. They next face Leicester on Tuesday and then Liverpool on Thursday.

“The boys who played Thursday and today will not play 90 minutes for sure,” Solskjaer added ahead of the clash against the Foxes.

“The sports scientists will do their job. They will sit down on Tuesday and see who is ready.”
