Mesut Ozil appeared to take aim at his former Arsenal boss Unai Emery ahead of the Gunners’ crunch showdown with Villarreal.
Arsenal must overturn a 2-1 deficit against the Spanish side, who are now managed by Emery, to reach the Europa League final.
And Ozil took to Twitter to wish his former side luck on Thursday evening, but seemed to mock Emery’s accent in the process, making light of the Spaniard’s ‘good ebening [evening]’ phrase.
Ozil tweeted: “Good ebening, Gunners! I hope my former teammates will turn this game around tonight – let’s go! #yagunnersya #coyg“
The Gunners were dealt a major blow prior to kick-off with Granit Xhaka forced to withdraw from the contest after picking up a muscle complaint in the warm-up.
Mikel Arteta was forced to reshuffle his pack with Xhaka replaced in the starting XI by Kieran Tierney – who had been sidelined for Arsenal’s previous eight games.
Speaking on BT Sport prior to kick off, Gunners legend Martin Keown underlined what a boost it is for Arteta to have Tierney back at his disposal.
“Tierney is a wonderful player,” the legendary former defender said.
“I’ve talked about, maybe in the future, him becoming captain.
“He’s a driving force, he gets down that left hand side time after time whipping crosses in.”
