Ryan Mason brushed off suggestions that Harry Kane was saying goodbye to Tottenham fans as tension among supporters boiled over in the stands following the defeat to Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.
The Lilywhites provided further evidence why their talisman might think he needs to leave to be successful after an abject display at home severely hurt their Europa League chances.
Kane has reportedly told the club he wants to be sold this summer and there is no surprise as this performance shows how far Spurs have fallen in recent years.
Images emerged of fans clashing with stewards after the final whistle as unrest escalated – days after hundreds of supporters gathered outside stadium to protest against ENIC and Daniel Levy – with angry chants and boos during the match.
A top-six finish is now out of their hands but Mason is confident the Kane news did not affected his side’s performance.
“No. I think you can see that by the first ten minutes,” he responded when asked by talkSPORT if the rumours hindered his side.
“We came out bright and we scored a good goal, so if it had affected us then I don’t think we would have come out and acted as we did.
“Moments change games and there was a couple big moments which changed the game in their favour and gave them a couple goals.
“In the Premier League, you find it very difficult to come back from giving a football team two goals.”
Mason brushed off suggestions that Kane waving goodbye to the home fans was a farewell.
“Harry does that every year,” a defiant Mason declared. “I played with him on the last game of the season, he always goes round and claps the fans.
“I’ve answered lots of questions on Harry over the last 24 hours but we’ve just lost a game in the Premier League. I’ll sit here and answer questions regarding the match but I’m not willing to answer questions on people’s future.”
Spurs were booed off by their returning supporters as a bizarre own goal from Sergio Reguilon and an Ollie Watkins strike completed a turnaround for Villa after Steven Bergwijn had put the hosts in front.
Mason insisted he understands Spurs fans’ frustrations with their hopes of securing Europa League football now hanging by a thread.
“We just lost a game of football. I’m disappointed, the players are disappointed. It’s an emotional game and we wanted to win and we didn’t do that,” he added.
“Our fans our disappointed and I have no problem with that as it’s part of the game.
He added: “It’s our last home game so I understand them being disappointed. I’m more disappointed that we didn’t win the game for our fans and I was frustrated at how we played at times.
“In terms of them being disappointed that’s not a problem at all. It’s normal.”
