Derby County remain in serious jeopardy of dropping out of the Championship heading into a crunch showdown with relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday on the final weekend this Saturday.
Survival is in the Rams’ hands, and should they beat Darren Moore’s men on home soil they will be guaranteed of a spot in next season’s second tier.
However, if the Owls win the hugely anticipated countdown then they will be relegated.
If Wayne Rooney’s side only pick up a share of the spoils in Saturday’s lunchtime encounter and Rotherham win at Cardiff they will also stare relegation in the face.
Simon Jordan was vehemently against Rooney’s appointment from the start and famously said on talkSPORT back in December 2020 that they should only appoint the Manchester United icon if they wanted to be relegated.
Well, that prospect is still very much real and the former Crystal Palace owner, speaking on Wednesday’s White & Jordan show, reiterated his views on Rooney’s managerial capability.
“When Frank Lampard went into Derby they went into Derby, they weren’t sitting bottom of the league,” Jordan said.
“He wasn’t having to fix a problem, it was about enhancing an opportunity.
“He had a relationship with Chelsea and bringing players through – it was a totally different dynamic.
“When Wayne Rooney went there they was bang, bang, bang neck deep in trouble.
“They needed someone that knew what they were doing. And with respect, he may skate away, but he didn’t know what he was doing and you can see it.
“Wayne Rooney took the job because he was bleeding lucky to get it and he shouldn’t have taken it as he wasn’t fit for the job.
“They’ve barely won in the last 12 games… they’ve dropped like a stone. They’ve now got a chance against Sheffield Wednesday – all four sides can actually stay up.
“But the balance of probability is either Derby, Sheffield Wednesday or Rotherham will.
“If Rotherham had taken their chances then this would be done now, Derby would be relegated.”
