Antonio Conte clear frontrunner for Tottenham job, despite Mauricio Pochettino hopes, as club look to finally replace Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced talks with former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, with a growing expectation he will be named the club’s new manager.

Spurs are still searching for a replacement for Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in April.

There has been mounting speculation chairman Daniel Levy wanted to tempt Mauricio Pochettino back to the club.

The Argentine is reportedly unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain and would be open to a return to north London, where he believes he has unfinished business.

But PSG club officials fought hard to keep the Argentine at the club, with Conte now poised to take over the reins in north London.

And now, according to Football London, it is now looking increasingly likely Conte will become the next Spurs boss.

Alasdair Gold reports that former Juventus director of football Fabio Paratici – who Conte worked with in Turin – is also primed to join the Premier League side.

The latest developments will excite Spurs fans, with the acquisition of Conte – one of the world’s best managers – viewed as a considerable coup.

It comes off the back of Conte quitting Inter Milan after he guided them to their first Serie A title since 2010.

Conte won the Premier League and FA Cup during his two seasons in the Premier League as Chelsea boss.

He previously led Juventus – the club with whom he was synonymous as a player – to three successive Serie A titles.

Despite the success Conte delivers, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan doubts whether he would be a good fit for Tottenham.

Speaking on talkSPORT last week as the Tottenham links emerged, Jordan said: “He was very impressive at Chelsea and he’s been very impressive at Inter, but he always leaves a trail of carnage and ill-feeling.

“If I’m Daniel Levy, knowing my personality, knowing I’m not going to release the purse strings or do precisely what Conte wants me to do, I’m already looking at a potential problem further down the line.

“I think that would be a match made in hell. We all sat here and said, ‘How can Daniel Levy and Jose Mourinho get on?’

“It looked alright for about five minutes and now it looks like it was a problem. Somebody got taken out before a cup final.

“That doesn’t tell you everything was happy in the back garden.”
