England face a nervous wait over a scan on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s thigh as the Three Lions’ injury problems stacked up in a 1-0 win over Austria on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool full-back joined an ever-growing injury list in the dying moments, overshadowing Bukayo Saka’s winner by limping off in clear discomfort.
And Gareth Southgate – also without Jordan Henderson, Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips and Jadon Sancho in the night – was unable to allay any fears over whether Alexander-Arnold would be ruled out of Euro 2020, which begins in just 11 days.
“At the moment, our medical team are assessing him and we will know more in the next 24 to 48 hours,” Southgate told talkSPORT.
“It’s obviously not a good sign to see him walk off the pitch in a fair bit of discomfort. We’ll just have to see what emerges.
“I think it’s his thigh. In terms of the severity, we’re still finding that out.”
Southgate will take plenty of positives from a victory without any of his numerous Chelsea, Manchester City and United stars due to their involvement in last week’s domestic European finals.
But Alexander-Arnold is not the only concern in the 26-man squad ahead of the opener against Croatia at Wembley.
While Phillips is close to full fitness after a shoulder injury and Sancho was out due to illness, there are still serious concerns over whether Maguire and Henderson will be fit for the start of the tournament.
And Southgate revealed Liverpool captain Henderson, who has not played since February, did not feel fit enough to feature against Austria.
“He wasn’t happy this morning with how he felt,” Southgate added. “We scanned him and that was all clear.
“The decision was taken not to involve him tonight and let’s see how he progresses from there.
“So we had him, Jadon [Sancho] who was ill and ruled out of this one, and Kalvin [Phillips], who is in full training but we wanted to leave any gameplay until Sunday to give it a bit longer.”
