England free-kick hero Kieran Trippier insists the squad are intent on improving their set-pieces after a lacklustre start from a dead ball to Euro 2020.
Whether it be through their shooting, like Trippier’s against Croatia in 2018, or the ‘Love Train’ at corners which was so successful in Russia, the Three Lions have got ability in these promising positions.
At Euro 2020, though, things haven’t quite gone their way with a number of disappointing deliveries from several takers across the first three games.
And Trippier, who will be whipping balls in if he does start against Germany in the last-16 clash at Wembley on Tuesday evening, is adamant things will improve.
He told talkSPORT: “We’ve set the bar high over the last couple of years with set-pieces and with the amount of goals that we have scored.
“We are a bit frustrated with not scoring as many goals as we thought we would but we know we’ve got fantastic people who can take deliveries. Mase [Mason Mount], Phil [Foden], Buakyo [Saka], and myself, who can put the money on the spot.
“We’ve been working on it and whoever is playing and is inline to take the set-pieces, we’ll back anybody.
“We know as players when we hit the first man we know we can do better with the delivery that we have got. Luke [Shaw] is another one that has got a fantastic delivery.
“We know we can do better but Tuesday is a new game and a new start. We’ve had six days to prepare so when it comes to the game, whoever is playing and taking the set-pieces will be ready to make sure it’s put in the mix.”
When it comes to England vs Germany, it’s a huge international rivalry but Trippier is also looking to get one over on them for a different reason.
Playing at Atletico Madrid, he finds German ace Toni Kroos as one of his neighbours and victory will allow him another reason to be cheerful when they bump into each other in the Spanish capital.
“I’ve seen him around the place because we live in the same complex in Madrid,” Trippier told talkSPORT. “He’s a very nice guy but come Tuesday we won’t be friends. We’ll be wanting to win the game for our nations.
“I’ve seen him when we’re walking our kids in Madrid and we’ve stopped and had a chat after the games when I’ve played against Real Madrid.
“I don’t know him personally but if I see him I’ll have a chat and say hello.”
And on the pitch, Trippier knows Kroos is a man to watch out for.
“We need to be wary of him,” he added. “We know about his set-pieces and how he’s been consistent with Real Madrid this season.”
